Sri Brihadeshwara Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is the most famous attraction of Tanjore. Built by Rajaraja Chola during the rule of the Chola Kingdom in the 10th century, this temple reflects a brilliant example of Indian architecture. It is world’s first temple built completely in granite. Its architectural beauty has earned it the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The temple is surrounded by fortified walls which were added in the 16th century. The 216 ft tall temple tower is among the tallest of its kind in the world. There is a beautiful state of Nandi bull carved out of a single rock at the entrance of the temple. During the raja-maharaja era the temple served as the venue for the important royal ceremonies like anointing the emperor. That time the temple had a staff of around 600 people taking care of different things. There were Brahmin priests, record-keepers, scholars, craftsmen, musicians etc.

The Palace

This beautiful architectural structure is known for its acoustically perfect ancient music hall and the Sivaganga tank that has sweet water. It also houses an art gallery displaying a rare collection of bronze and granite statues reflecting the glory of the Chola period.
